Bridgeport, which is located in Fairfield County is the most populated city in Connecticut. According to the 2010 United States Census the city had a population of 144,230. Bridgeport is the center of the 48th largest urban area in the United States. English colonists began settling in the city of Bridgeport in the 1640’s, the settlement became a center of trade, ship building and whaling. During the 19th century the city was quickly industrialized. Manufacturing was the mainstay of its local economy until the 1970’s. In the 21st century, conversion of office and factory buildings to residential use and other redevelopment is attracting new residents.
